SA Weather Service Bursaries, Internships and Learnerships 2026
These programmes aim to support talented individuals pursuing studies or training in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, and Weather Observation.
Successful candidates will receive full tuition coverage, monthly stipends, and gain valuable hands-on experience in the field of weather science.
Available SAWS Opportunities for 2026:
A) Forecasting Internship – Postgraduate Certificate in Weather Forecasting
Reference: FOI:01/11/2026
The Forecasting Internship Programme offers a one-year, full-time bursary opportunity for graduates who hold an Honours Degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences. The internship will take place at the SAWS Head Office in Pretoria, starting February 2026.
Minimum Requirements:
- Honours Degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences.
- Must include Mathematics (2nd-year level) and Physical Sciences (1st-year level).
- Qualification must comply or be near-compliant with WMO BIP-M (WMO-1083, 2023).
Application Must Include:
- Certified copies of Matric results and full academic record.
- Certified copy of ID document.
- Certified copies of relevant degrees.
- Motivation letter and detailed CV.
- Completed SAWS Full-Time Bursary Application Form (available on the website).
The Bursary Covers:
- Full tuition fees.

B) BSc Honours in Meteorology Bursary

The SA Weather Service is offering bursaries to students studying or intending to study for a BSc Honours in Meteorology. Applicants must have a confirmation letter or proof of registration from a recognized university.
Application Must Include:
- Certified copies of Matric results, academic record, and BSc degree (if available).
- Certified copy of SA ID document.
- Motivation letter and testimonial.
- Completed SAWS Full-Time Bursary Application Form.
The Bursary Covers:
- Full tuition fees.
- Monthly stipend for the duration of study.
Recommended Attributes:
- Good interpersonal relations.
- Basic computer literacy.
C) National Certificate: Weather Observations Learnership
Reference: NCW:01/11/2026
The Weather Observations Learnership offers a 12-month training opportunity at the SAWS Regional Training Centre in Pretoria. Candidates will undergo training in all aspects of weather observation and may later be placed at SAWS regional offices.
Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12 (Matric) with:
- 50% or higher in Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy)
- 50% or higher in Physical Science
- 50% or higher in English
- Valid driver’s licence (or must obtain one during the learnership at own cost).
Application Must Include:
- Certified copies of Matric results and SA ID document.
- Certified copy of driver’s licence (if available).
- Motivation letter and detailed CV.
- Completed SAWS Full-Time Bursary Application Form.
The Bursary Covers:
- Monthly stipend for the duration of study.
Important:
After successful completion, learners may be appointed at SAWS regional offices. Candidates from previously disadvantaged communities and women are strongly encouraged to apply.
