Theย National Metrology Institute of South Africa (NMISA)ย is seeking aย self-motivated and detail-orientedย individual to join their team in theย Biomedical Science unitย as an intern under theย Dosimetry Standards section.

This internship offers an excellent opportunity for recent graduates to receive training and hands-on experience in the field of dosimetry measurement standards, radiation protection, and metrology.

NMISA Internship Programme 2025

This internship aims to provide valuable training in the development and maintenance of measurement standards related to dosimetry. As an intern, you will work closely with experienced professionals, assisting in the dosimetry audit and various tasks in the section. This is an opportunity to develop practical skills in an accredited laboratory environment and contribute to meaningful projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Training & Development:ย Receive training within the Biomedical Science unit, specifically in the Dosimetry Standards section, focusing on the development, maintenance, and dissemination of measurement standards.
  • Support Dosimetry Audits:ย Assist with dosimetry audits and help perform related duties as required by the section.
  • Measurement Standards:ย Assist in generating, validating, and reviewing procedures for performing measurements in the field of dosimetry. Maintain detailed records of equipment and measurement results generated during the course of the study.
  • Administrative Support:ย Provide administrative support, including the procurement of laboratory consumables and ensuring the timely acquisition of equipment and instruments necessary for the duties.
  • EHS Responsibilities:ย Assist in meetingย EHS (Environmental, Health, and Safety)ย objectives and maintain the laboratoryโ€™s responsibilities in alignment with these goals.
  • Metrology Skills Transfer:ย Participate in skill-building activities by attending courses, conferences, and presenting your work on assigned projects.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • Academic Qualification:ย Aย BSc Hons in Physicsย or an equivalent qualification.
  • Knowledge of Radiation Protection:ย Basic understanding of radiation protection and radiation science is required.
  • Software Proficiency:ย Basic proficiency inย MS Officeย software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Mathematical and Statistical Knowledge:ย A good foundation in mathematical and statistical principles is essential for data analysis and reporting.
  • Communication Skills:ย Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write detailed reports and present findings clearly.
  • Attention to Detail & Dependability:ย The ideal candidate should be highly detail-conscious, reliable, and able to act in an understanding and helpful manner while performing tasks.
  • Ethics & Teamwork:ย A commitment to honesty, ethical conduct, and teamwork, with a cooperative and good-natured attitude when working with others.
